Founded in 1842 as one of the minor port producers and shippers, they are unique in that they succeeded in avoiding extinction or being bought by one of the "Big Five" by becoming the first producer to both make and sell unfortified table wine.

Outside of Portugal, they also have a foothold in the Mosel in Germany (there is a high percentage of German in the family gene). Dirk’s first wife was Swiss and his current wife is German; his mother was also German.
