Niepoort Wines at Caviste

When it comes to the world of wine, few names evoke the same level of admiration and respect as Niepoort. This esteemed Portuguese producer has been crafting exceptional wines for over 150 years, and their latest range is now available at Caviste, the ultimate destination for wine connoisseurs.

A brief history of Niepoort

Niepoort are the most innovative producer in the Douro Valley, a region known for its breathtaking landscapes and exceptional wines.

Founded in 1842 as one of the minor port producers and shippers, they are unique in that they succeeded in avoiding extinction or being bought by one of the "Big Five" by becoming the first producer to both make and sell unfortified table wine.

Today, Niepoort is not only recognised as a pioneer in the production of Port wines but also as a trailblazer in the production of table wines and the diversity and versatility of Portuguese winemaking. Their dedication to innovation has led them to experiment with different grape varieties and winemaking techniques, resulting in a range of wines that are both classic and contemporary.

Outside of Portugal, they also have a foothold in the Mosel in Germany (there is a high percentage of German in the family gene). Dirk’s first wife was Swiss and his current wife is German; his mother was also German. This gives the Niepoort family a strong global perspective on the quality and innovation required in wine production, and ever evolving world of taste.

What sets Niepoort apart from other producers?

Niepoort is not just a winery; it is a symbol of tradition, passion, and innovation. Founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, this family-owned business has been passed down through five generations, each contributing their expertise and vision to the legacy.

A sign of their innovation was the drive towards the unfortified table wines. Breaking with the tradition of the main Port houses, Niepoort also expanded their vineyards to other regions, including Bairrada, Dão, Vinho Verde… and even Spain!

At the time, this was considered by the main producers as being a flagrant act of disloyalty within the sacred world of port production. However, following on the heels of Niepoort, most other port shippers now make their own range of table wines!

Whether its wines from the Douro, or further afield, Niepoort's unwavering commitment to quality is at the heart of each project.

They believe that great wines are made in the vineyard, and their meticulous attention to detail throughout the winemaking process is a testament to this philosophy. From carefully selecting the finest grapes to employing traditional methods alongside modern techniques, Niepoort wines are a true reflection of Portugal's varying terroir and the artistry of its winemaking.

Conclusion

Portugal is one of our core wine producing countries at Caviste.  We adore the diversity, the brilliance and outstanding ‘quality to value’ ratio, and there is yet even more to discover.  How far we have come beyond the world of simply ‘port’.

Niepoort's presence at Caviste is a celebration of Portugal's winemaking legacy and the Niepoort family's dedication to producing exceptional wines.

So, whether you are a seasoned wine enthusiast or a curious beginner, a bottle of Niepoort is an invitation to embark on a sensory journey through the rich history and exquisite flavours of Portuguese winemaking.
