Postponed: A Tasting of Niepoort Wine & Ports - Current and Older Vintages - Date TBC

£95.00

Dirk Niepoort is acknowledged by many to be Portugal’s most important winemaker in the past 50 years, maybe the last century. Not only has he been an innovator within Portugal’s most famous wine region, the Douro, but he has applied his skills and sense of adventure to other regions that include Bairrada, Vinho Verde and Dão – helping to place Portugal firmly within the world’s wine map. At the same time he has made known a number of historic and essential grape varieties.

His son, Daniel, also a winemaking genius, joined us in February and will join us again via Zoom on a future date.

Niepoort has been an independent family business since its creation in 1842.

Today Niepoort is one of Portugal's most iconic producers of both port and table wines. Dirk Niepoort has been a relentless innovator and creative, spearheading the table wine revolution in the Douro over the past thirty years and his son Daniel has continued on this path.

An early priority was to purchase parcels of old, steep (and often north facing) vineyards in the Douro to give greater control over supply. Quinta de Napoles was purchased in 1987 with thirty hectares and Quinta do Carril followed in 1988 with nine hectares. Niepoort now own over eighty hectares of vineyards in the Douro, all farmed organically. Further rare old vines have also been acquired in the Bairrada, Dão and Minho regions as they continue their insatiable appetite for new projects and invention.
